Designers envision the future and make “what’s next” by creating solutions and selecting production processes. The topic of “Design Futures” pertains to the (a) anticipatory and strategic possibilities of design; (b) the sociocultural context that makes such possibilities feasible; and (c) the theoretical frameworks and methodological operationalization that make such anticipation concretely feasible.
Understanding the Designer’s mindset and combining it with strategy is expected in the research papers/articles in the given issue. Following pointers may be taken into consideration when approaching a strategy to work out a submission.
– Society: what is the social role that of anticipatory / concept design/ design strategy?
– Culture: what is the relationship between design futures and culture? Does it impact on the prospective strategy for the future?
– Sustainability: what is the role of Design & Design strategy along with Design Business, Business design in terms of environmental impact/climate change?
– Foresight: what are the possible, probable, and preferable futures that Design anticipates?
– Vision: what is the connection between brand vision and Design concepts?
– Strategy: what are possible strategies that a design concept implicitly or explicitly inspires?
With the advent of the inclusion of Design Thinking in almost every single field, if not for the actual application but for general awareness, it is imperative that the Designer not looks at the possibilities of Design being used in the form of strategy for the Future. Or possibly envision Design Futures with the currently available knowledge about Design & its implications in fields that are relevant.
Though like any other discipline of study, it may not be the ultimate problem solution. Collaboration within various fields may be required to be taken into consideration. What could be the possible avenues for collaborations for Design futures in terms of application, innovation, and relevance so that the ideas do not merely be retained as ideas only but get transformed into implementation? Various platforms have been popularised along with
methodologies like the IDEO card methods, Design thinking method, Critical thinking method, problem solutions, Screening the solutions, and problem identification-based methods like the 3M & the Toyota method to envision the future. What could be the possible merging pathways?
While the above is relevant what could the Innovative methodologies that may be envisioned for the future as a thought or an idea which may be worked to come up with Design Futures & Future strategies? Could the Think Tanks & the Service Jams happening globally be a means to an end or a means to ideation only? Could there be a possibility of idea waste that could be worked into solutions and a possible future? Methods like fiction and storytelling can be devised to understand and predict Design Futures. Should Trend research and trend forecasting be included?
The above subject may range from a varied perspective towards Design Futures but may be discussed with an outlook of Design Strategy formulation for implementation and ideation.
